It promotes the welfare of the elderly who are residents in the city of Nottingham, particularly those of African and African Caribbean origin, by providing day care, luncheon club facilities and reminiscence therapy for elders with dementia and alzheimers.
Other beneficiaries of the service are elders who are aged 55 or more who may be incapacitated through strokes, arthritis, and mobility related conditions which severly restrict their ability to function at home. Day cares assistants comments:
" Our role consist of sorting paper work, making phone calls, preparing food which is cooked from fresh and on site. We also participate in games and activities such as dominoes, board games, sewing, exercise etc, and arrange day trips and outings. Welfare advice and benefit support is provided if they require. The elders can teach us workers by sharing their experiences with us"
" Working at The Marcus Garvey Centre has been a real eye opener for me, seeing how they enjoy socialising and getting involved in the activities is good but also with me being Black British born they have taught me a lot about my culture and history which I found very insightful"
